Oak Hill’s Got Pi!!

News 12 NJ Positively NJ

March 14, 2018 better known as 3.14 or Pi day marked the 6th consecutive time that Oak Hill Academy Math Teacher, Mrs. Rita Cotterell and her students shared in the school’s tradition of celebrating this special day.  From making Pi plates, creating a Pi chain and lisitening to what Pi sounds like, students not only learn where Pi came from but do their own exploration of this very famous irrational number.

8th Grader, Justin Weber, recites 860 consecutive digits of Pi This year was not only special because Justin set a new school record for the third consecutive year, but News 12 NJ came to our Monmouth County Private School, to cover this incredible talent.  Mr. Brian Donohue and his “Positively New Jersey” segment was able to get Justin to share some insight into his secret as well as get some history about Mrs. Cotterell’s passion for this special day and how its popularity has grown like wildfire among the students at Oak Hill.

It all began in 2012 with Oak Hill Alum, Michael Zhang (’16) reciting about 125 digits of Pi and truly amazing everyone with his performance.  But that was only the tip of the iceberg as he passed his torch to another alum, Mason Garber (’17) the following year. It has grown each year from there.

Addy Basile recites 446 digits of Pi Many students gathered together after school to root on and participate in showing off how many digits of Pi they were able to recite.  8th grader Addie Basile displayed some strong recitation skills with her 446 digits while fellow classmate, Molly Jain, repeated 118 digits!

The festivities concluded with all of those in attendance getting to share in some Pi Day treats to celebrate this special day.
