Sandy Hook, NJ – Dating back to last spring, Oak Hill Academy took home First place for the third straight time (out of a 32 team field) hosted by the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) Jeopardy style academic competition on Friday, March 4 at their M.A.S.T. campus on Sandy Hook.
The competition consisted of a round robin preliminary round of 8 groups of 4 teams each (with 4 team members competing) in a Jeopardy style competition where there were six categories with point totals of 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 in each. After the first three rounds were completed, the total scores of the three rounds were totaled to create the seeding for the final rounds. After this result, Oak Hill occupied the 2nd & 3rd seeds overall! Unfortunately, this meant it was an Oak Hill 3 vs. Oak Hill 4 semi-final.
In its semi-final, Team 3 (#2 seed) defeated Team 4 (#3 seed and defending champion from the Spring). It was on to the finals versus Forrestdale 4 (who upset the Forrestdale 2, the #1 seed), the #1 overall seed. It was a very challenging final round, but when it was all said and done, Oak Hill 3 emerged as the Champion winning 820 to 460! In the consolation round Oak Hill 4 lost to top seeded Forrestdale 2 and earned 4th place. Rounding out the top 1/3 teams, Oak Hill 1 secured 9th place and Oak Hill 7 took home 11th.
Congratulations to Team 3 team members (all 8thgraders): Aron Wiener, Leah Wilson, Michael Zhang, Stephanie Zhou, Erin Gilfillan and Thomas Wang, and coached by Miss Patrice Murray and Mr. Joseph Pacelli. Team 4 team members (all 7th graders): Nicholas Geissler, Sydney Yan, Grant D’Orsi, Mason Garber, Jessica Yatvitskiy, and Elizabeth Lee, and coached by Mrs. Rita Cotterell.
