Navigating through the Nordic countries with the first stop at Norway. Students have taken roles as topographers, navigators through the fjords, designing tools to eat Norwegian foods, constructing snow covered mountains from marshmallows and measuring heights. Creative and one-of-a-kind trolls help tell the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and unique bridge building.  Other Norwegian folktales such as “Panneka” or Pancake and “Why the Bear has a stumpy tail” reinforce good decision making skills. The Northern Lights or “Aurora Borealis” were fun to paint while listening to music, and the art of “Rosemaling” was introduced to the students. This type of folk art is done on furniture and objects using curly, swirly movements and includes the letters C and S. Of course, the Vikings who were known for the slogan: “Raiding leads to trading” has been fun to learn about, as students continue their journey with Finland and Sweden.

So, the essential question- “What makes each country unique?” Students have been busy researching each country with the use of ipads and books to discover the individuality of each country. Discovering foods, sports, modern technology and innovative ideas spark interest in learning about these Nordic countries. Oak Hill Academy as a NJ Independent School gives the students the opportunity to explore curriculum that is not a standard in public schools. Promoting new materials, reflecting on the past and applying to the present and future gives students much to ponder about. Oak Hill Academy is where students can be creative while learning!
