7th Grade Math Workshop classes at Oak Hill Academy, a NJ Independent School, have been “investing” in the stock market.
They began by learning about what the stock market is as well as the types of events which may affect the value of a stock. Students have learned what dividends are, how to calculate the price-earnings ratio and the rate of return on an investment. They have also learned how to research a company online and study a company’s growth charts and trends. Students, working cooperatively, are given $10,000 to invest in a variety of companies. The winner of the stock market project is the team that earns the most money at the conclusion of the project (or loses the least money!).
The students are loving this activity; they are using their math skills and applying them to a very real world situation. Meaningful and relevant projects such as this is what makes Oak Hill Academy the top private school in Monmouth County.
